Optical Systems Engineer

Compact Particle Acceleration Corporation (CPAC) is a start-up company focused on the development of the dielectric-wall accelerator (DWA) and its application to particle therapy and other fields of use. DWA technology will form the basis of a compact, high-gradient particle accelerator that is anticipated to be used in medical, security and defense applications.

CPAC collaborates with TomoTherapy and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) to optimize the DWA for particle therapy and other applications. CPAC will also work with other commercial partners to develop the DWA for non-medical applications.

CPAC has an opening for an Optical Systems Engineer and we are looking to add a leader in optical systems development. We are looking for a dedicated, focused, hard working professional with excellent work ethic and team spirit.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, and test prototype and production high power laser/optical components and systems.
  • Define and specify key optical components for complex illumination systems, including lenses, filters, lasers, LEDs, sensors and detectors.
  • Develop test plan and verification procedures; take part in testing and experimentation.
  • Assemble, align, activate, and test prototype optical systems in laboratory environment.
  • Work with mechanical and electrical engineers to prototype breadboard systems for experimental verification of design concepts.
  • Use computer aided design software such as Zemax or Code V or other tools to develop complex designs

Required Qualifications:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering or Solid State Physics. Relevant work experience in a technically related field may be considered.
  • 10+ years industry experience in laser and fiber optic design, specifying and evaluating optical components (including lasers, fibers, modulators, photo detectors, optical amplifiers, couplers, etc.), building, testing and validating fiber optic systems.
  • Experience with optical design programs such as Zemax or Code V
  • Broad knowledge of optical components and systems including conceptual design, manufacturing, system integration and testing.
  • Demonstrated track record of accomplishment in product development from prototype stage through commercialization.
  • Experience working with large complex systems, including prototype development and characterization is essential.
  • Must be able to provide concrete evidence of initiative, self motivation, outstanding work ethic, and ownership.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, necessary to interact effectively in a diverse team environment, and make effective presentations.
